Respiratory

Hypoventilation

A sustained rise in CO2 during sleep, confirmed on a reliable CO2 channel rather than oximetry.

Educational reference, not a diagnostic tool. A scored event, an elevated index and a clinical diagnosis are different things. Follow your facility’s scoring manual, notification policies and clinical protocols.

  • Rise of 10 mmHg or more to above 50 mmHg for at least 10 minutes; it need not exceed 55.
  • CO2 above 55 mmHg held for at least 10 minutes is the alternative pathway.
  • Oxygen alone cannot establish hypoventilation; confirm reliable CO2 measurement.
  • This is a minutes-long CO2 trend, not a brief apnea waveform.
